People In Music History
Messiaen, Olivier [Eugene Prosper Charles] (1908-1992) French composer and
also organist and writer on music. Member of the former "Young France" group.
Influenced by Indian music, and cultivated great rhythmical complexity. Used
almost literal orchestral imitation of bird song in various works, including
The Awakening of the Birds for piano and orchestra. Had also written various
works with Roman Catholic associations, including church music, Visions of the
Amen for 2 pianos, Twenty Looks at the Child Jesus for one piano; also songs,
organ works, etc.
